Art is often like a riddle; it can say one thing and mean another. I’ve always been fascinated by symbol and metaphor. With this kind of work, nothing is only what it seems: objects, animals and even colours all tell a bigger story.
My work is deeply personal. However, I have found that what my drawings say to me can be very different from what they say to others. All of us have a unique individual history that affects how we read and respond to art.
I love realism that is a bit painterly, where the focus is on the medium as well as the subject – so why pencil and not paint? The answer is that I’ve tried many “paint” media, including acrylic, pastel, and watercolour, but pencil will always be my greatest love. It offers both the joy of colour and the poetry of black and white. It is such a simple, basic tool, but capable of enormous complexity and precision. There is nothing like the quiet, meditative intimacy of drawing; for me it is one of the most rewarding experiences that art has to offer.
