Silent Spring

I started this series as a means of exploring emotion and potential change. As the girls are still young children here, I thought of Rachel Carson's famous title “Silent Spring”. I know what she meant by it, but I thought of the phrase differently. I pictured a very early spring, still cold and with hardly any visible growth, but with all kinds of things going on beneath the surface.

The series started with the little blonde girl, whose classical features lent themselves perfectly to the restrained effect I wanted.  Her dark-haired sister was very different in both looks and personality.  However, the drawings I made of her seemed to flow directly out of those of her sister, so I always think of the two as one series.
